The project will potentially expand the indications for proton therapy by allowing the safe and accurate treatment of patients groups where proton therapy is today considered unsafe or requires very large safety margins, negating its advantage over photon therapy.
The overall project has 3 main objectives:
- Develop high quality imaging by combining x-ray of different energies for soft tissue contrast enhancement and daily range verification, optimized for static and mobile anatomy.
- Optimize the relationship between the visibility of the tumour and the dose delivered to the patient for different patient groups (e.g. head and neck & lung cancer patients, children).
- Develop workflows to adapt the treatment to the anatomical changes during proton therapy (e.g. tumour shrinkage).
This studentship is funded by the EPSRC DTP covering fees and stipend (RCUK rate) Start date September 2018 for 3.5 years.
Applicants must be from the UK/EU and have obtained (or be about to obtain) a minimum 2:1 Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area.
