EFOMP Leadership Course

EFOMP together with the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) and the European Network for Training and Education of Medical Physics Experts (EUTEMPE) organised the EFOMP course 'Leading Medical Physics to a Sustainable Future' on 17th-19th March 2025 in Brussels and online.

EFOMP's strategic roadmap for the coming years embraces a holistic approach,  integrating all aspects of medical physics—from cutting-edge research and robust education to transformative clinical practice and long-term sustainability.

One particularly inspiring goal is the commitment to empowering Early Career Medical Physicists, amplifying their voice, and supporting their growth. By strengthening and training this community, EFOMP is fostering a future where innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity are at the heart of medical physics while patient care and safety remain our primary focus.

Purposes of the leadership course are:

  • To train and identify future leaders in medical physics across Europe, ensuring a strong pipeline of skilled, visionary professionals to advancing the field.
  • To educate participants on the existing structures of influence within Europe, enabling them to effectively navigate and utilize these Europe's key frameworks to maximize patient benefits across Europe and beyond.
  • To provide invaluable networking opportunities for current and aspiring leaders, fostering collaboration, innovation and knowledge exchange within the field

This course is suitable for medical physicists at all stages of their careers. It is suitable for physicists working in all disciplines (radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, radiology, hospital physics) in both clinical and academic settings.

Next edition of the course will be organised in 2026.

Participants impressions

An incredible three days at the European Federation Of Organizations For Medical Physics - EFOMP - Leadership Course in Brussels—learning, networking, and redefining what it means to lead in medical physics. We didn’t just talk leadership; we brought it to life—shaping mission, vision, and strategy while fostering collaboration and real impact. A key focus? Empowering early-career medical physicists to have a voice in shaping the future of our profession. Huge thanks to EFOMP,  ECO, EUTEMPE-NET, ENEN, all the speakers, and especially James Louttit for an outstanding session. And, of course, a shout-out to the legendary “long table” roundtable discussion!  Thank you  - Efi Koutsouveli, Paddy Gilligan, Danielle Kalkman-Dobbe, Ioannis Sechopoulos, Iuliana Toma-Dasu, Dimitris Visvikis, Hilde Bosmans, Marco Esposito, Mariken Zijlmans, Aaron McLoughlinm, James Louttit and many more. This course was a wake-up call—the future of medical physics depends on the leaders we choose to become. Excited for what’s next!

EFOMP Leadership Course in #Brussels - where strategy met purpose. Throughout the course, we explored how to lead with purpose, craft a clear mission and vision, and balance leadership vs. management.  Thanks to #EFOMP for the engaging workshops, invaluable insights, and inspiring peers — and to James Louttit for a standout session full of practical leadership insights. Leadership isn’t just strategy and managing teams - it’s about inspiring change, tailoring communication and leading by example while listening and staying authentic. This course was a deep dive into all of this and more.

Thank you for the wonderful course, especially for the opportunity to participate online.  Congratulations to the organizers on the idea for the course and its fantastic implementation! Many important topics were covered, including the vision of Medical Physics in 2035, sustainability and placing the patient at the center of everything. Key take-aways for me include starting with “WHY”, silent writing, the importance of networking, prioritization, avoiding burnout,  being yourself, as well as "teach, teach, couch, delegate” :). I gained a new perspective on Baloo the bear as a project manager guru and the Important vs. Urgent Matrix – the Louttit Matrix.

Many thanks to EFOMP (Efi Koutsouveli and Paddy Gilligan) for organizing the exceptional workshop "Leading Medical Physics To a Sustainable Future" in Brussels! This event brought together an impressive panel of experts, offering high-quality presentations and fostering in-depth discussions on the role of medical physics in sustainable development. It was an honor to witness the strong representation of leading societies and institutions, including: EANM, ESTRO, ESR, Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), ICRP, COCIR Medical Physics Societies, and many others! Their contributions highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and responsibility in shaping the future of our field. Events like these strengthen our community and foster meaningful progress. I look forward to continuing this journey toward a more sustainable future in medical physics!

The EFOMP leadership course was such a valuable experience for me. Thanks to the professionals who delivered their lectures, as an early-career medical physicist, the course gave me the boost of energy and confidence I needed to embrace leadership more fully in my role at the hospital, even if it's just about ownership of little tasks. It also helped me develop skills that go beyond the workplace - like better communication and decision-making; which I use in my daily life too. My only complaint is that the course was too short! Thanks to all the organisers for making this experience so fruitful, I can understand the challenges of a hybrid course, but this one ran so smoothly that I felt I was there in the same room.
