Head of Radiotherapy Physics – Poole Hospital UK
Due to the retirement of the post holder, we have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Radiotherapy Physics. A high calibre candidate is required to lead a team of 23 physicists and technologists providing high quality services in radiotherapy physics to the Dorset Cancer Centre based at Poole Hospital on the south coast of the UK.
The successful candidate must be registered to practice as a Clinical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), or eligible for such, have significant previous experience of acting at a senior level in Radiotherapy Physics i.e. as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE), and preferably be an accredited Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA), or willing to working towards that.
This post attracts a salary range of £67,247 to £83,258 p.a. according to the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale 8D. Candidates will be eligible for the NHS pension scheme, up to 33 days paid annual leave, and paid sick leave.

The current radiotherapy equipment comprises two Varian Clinac iX linacs which deliver a range of RapidArc IMAT treatments, one Elekta Synergy and one Elekta Precise Linac, two Philips wide-bore multi-slice CT scanners with associated Prosoma virtual simulation software, one Gulmay/Xstrahl superficial/deep X-ray unit, two multi-workstation treatment planning systems (Varian Eclipse and Elekta XiO), an integrated patient management and verification system (Elekta Mosaiq) and one Elekta Flexitron remote after-loading brachytherapy unit with Oncentra Brachy treatment planning. Prostate brachytherapy using Iodine -125 seeds is also carried out using Varian Variseed TPS.
An expansion programme for Radiotherapy within Dorset will provide two new bunkers and a new Varian TrueBeam Linac (each with FFF facilities) at a satellite unit in Dorchester 25 miles to the west of Poole. Construction of the bunkers has commenced with the new facility expected to open early 2018.
The radiotherapy department serves a population of approximately 0.75 million treating approximately 2300 patient courses per annum.
The post holder will provide professional, managerial and scientific leadership to the Radiotherapy Physics Department to ensure the provision of the highly specialist scientific and technical services to the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital and Dorset County Hospital.
The post holder will need to demonstrate a proven track record of effective service delivery, professional and strategic leadership. Extensive knowledge of radiation and associated areas within radiation Physics is essential. They must have excellent communication skills and the ability to develop effective relationships with a wide range of healthcare staff and stakeholders.
