The European Federation of Organisations in Medical Physics (EFOMP) was founded in 1980. The current membership covers 34 national organisations and 3 affiliated national organisations which together represent more than 5000 physicists and engineers in the field of Medical Physics. All EFOMP actions are based on its constitution, which also defines the structure of the organisation.
Aims and purposes of EFOMP include:
- fostering and coordinating the activities of National Member Organisations, collaborating with national and international organisations, particularly IOMP,
- encouraging exchange and dissemination of professional and scientific information, and exchange of Medical Physicists between countries,
- proposing guidelines for education, training and accreditation programmes,
- making recommendations on the appropriate general responsibilities, organisational relationships and roles of Medical Physicists, and
- encouraging the formation of Organisations for Medical Physics where such organisations do not exist.

EFOMP supports Meetings, Congresses and Courses through sponsorships. and recognizes outstanding work that individual members of NMO's contribute to its aim through awarding the EFOMP medal or honorary membership.
The 3rd European Conference on Medical Physics by EFOMP will be held in conjuction with the World Congress 2009 on Medical Physics in September 2009 at Munich, Germany.
